E-Paper Display Principle

E-paper is also known as electronic paper display technology. Electronic Paper Display (EPD) was successfully developed by Professor Joseph Jacobsen of MIT and his R&D team after more than 30 years of research.

The structure of this paper consists of two substrates coated with a layer of e-paper made up of countless tiny transparent particles. These particles are formed by sealing positively and negatively charged black and white particles inside internal liquid microcapsules. The differently charged particles move in different directions depending on the applied electric field, presenting black or white effects on the display surface.

As a result, black-and-white patterns and text resembling printed matter can be displayed on the surface of the "electronic paper," looking very similar to actual paper. Unlike traditional LCDs, there is no glare in sunlight. Additionally, power is consumed only when pixel colors change (for example, switching from black to white), and the displayed image remains on the screen even when the power is turned off, making it very energy-efficient. E-paper combined with storage chips can hold an entire library.

Electronic ink is actually a new type of material, a product of multidisciplinary development in chemistry, physics, and electronics. This material can be printed onto the surface of any material to display text or image information.
